PROGRAM PRACTICE:

Evaluate Teacher Performance
From: Arkansas Virtual School

Sample Materials:

Three methods are used to evaluate the Arkansas Virtual School’s (ARVS) teacher effectiveness and performance. Data collected from these evaluation methods are used to justify annual teacher contracts and pay increases.

  1. A comprehensive teacher performance rubric.
  2. Semi-annual visits to teachers’ home offices by a school administrator.
  3. Feedback from online parent evaluation surveys administered twice a year.

After ARVS administrators developed the performance rubric with teacher input, they piloted an administration of the rubric that incorporated teachers’ feedback and suggested revisions.

The ARVS administrator, equivalent to a building principal, visits each teacher for a full day two times per year. During the visit, the administrator observes the teacher’s interaction with the students online, discusses interactions the teacher has had with the families, works through instructional strategies for teaching state standards, etc.

The parent surveys are administered in the middle of the fall semester and again toward the end of each spring. The response rates are higher in the fall, with approximately 70% of parents responding, while only about 50% of parents respond in the spring.
